Kiln formed glass is the umbrella art form that includes glass fusing, casting, vitrigraph, and kiln carving, to name a few. Glass fusing is a specific technique in the artform that is kiln formed glass.
Glass fusing is the process of joining 2 or more layers of compatible glass in an electric kiln, which are then fired to varying degrees to achieve different results. Both layers of glass must have the same coefficient of expansion (COE) for successful fusing. Fusing glass to higher or lower temperatures will give different results and grants the artist the power to create colorful, dynamic works of glass art that are completely unique.
Kiln temperature and length of firing time plays a huge role in the outcome of this glass art. To fully fuse two or more layers of glass to form one object, the pieces must fire in a kiln to approximately 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.
Depending on the glass, the size and thickness of the project, each firing in the kiln can take anywhere from 12-15 hours for smaller pieces and up to 24-30 hours for larger pieces. Many projects are fused 3 or more times to achieve completion. Glass fusing design elements are cut, shaped and arranged over or under a single layer of glass and fired flat. The second firing is necessary to add additional embellishments, round up outer edges and/or attain a more polished look. The third firing is necessary to add contour to the glass by slumping into a mold or draping over a mold to achieve a specific shape. To reduce the possibility or thermal shock and breakage, each firing requires a slow cooling down period in the kiln until the glass returns to room temperature.
I create fused glass to be framed for wall hangings, art discs to be displayed in stands, garden art and functional pieces.
